Well Woman Exams
Here’s what to expect during your first well-woman exam.
It’s perfectly natural to be nervous before your first well-woman visit, but it’s critical not to avoid scheduling an appointment. A well-woman exam is the first line of defence against disorders affecting the female reproductive system and can detect early signs of cervical cancer. That is why regular attendance at your yearly checkup is so critical.
Who needs one?
Any woman who is 21 years old and up should get regular well-woman exams. If you are younger than 21 but sexually active, then you should be getting them too.
Book a well-woman exam yearly.
What happens at the appointment?
- Physical exam- The doctor will begin with a regular physical check-up. They will check your height, weight, blood pressure and all of your vital signs. They will ask about your medical history and if you have any concerns.
- Breast exam- The doctor will check your breasts for any abnormalities or lumps and will show you how to perform a breast self-examination. This exam helps with the early detection of breast cancer.
- Pelvic exam and pap smear- For this exam, you will be lying down with your feet in leg rests. The doctor will examine the outside of your vagina first, then they will check the size of your cervix, ovaries and uterus and check to see where they are positioned. Finally, the doctor will take a tissue sample from your cervix. It shouldn’t hurt, but you will feel a pinch. These tests can detect various conditions including cervical cancer.
